"Kids" by MGMT

Up on Magic Mountain, I split a shake with a cutie little English chick. We both wanted to see what it would do.

She had arrived on the island on vacation with her boyfriend over a year earlier, as an accountant. When her boyfriend dumped her in the middle of their trip, she decided to just stick around and make a living as a novelty act singing Thai pop songs.

We finished our shake, mildly disappointed at its lack of effect, and went our separate ways. She took off with her friends down Sunrise Beach while I got on my scooter and hit the road back to my bungalow in Baan Tai. On my way out, I heard "Kids" by MGMT blaring from one of the beach's sound systems.

About halfway back, the red tail light on the back of the scooter ahead of me suddenly became very interesting to me. I stared at it, mesmerized by its warm crimson glow. Maybe the shake was having some effect after all. I started humming the song to myself.

I made it safely back to the bungalows and parked my scooter. But as I started walking I decided I wasn't ready to go to bed yet. No, I would stumble down to the beach and lie in a hammock and listen to the ocean and mull over what the hell was happening to my brain. Shorty appeared as soon as I thought of him, as though I had somehow summoned the dog telepathically. He was a good dog, a loyal and faithful companion, and he followed me to the hammock and sat down in the sand beside me as I swung the thing wildly back and forth, back and forth, still humming the song.

I closed my eyes, and crazy kaleidoscope visions came to me in all colours. When I opened my eyes, they went away. I closed my eyes again and different visions came to me, clear and elaborate like dreams, strange and frightening ideas. Again, I opened my eyes, and they were gone. I smiled smugly like a madman. I was high, but not so much that I no longer had control over my own mind. Again, I hummed to myself.

Eventually, Shorty got bored with me (or realized I wasn't going to feed him) and trotted off into the night.
