"Like a Hurricane" by Neil Young & Crazy Horse

I headed to Seoul for the weekend. Alone, ten thousand kilometres from home, from the people I loved, I decided to spend my Saturday night getting drunk in the sleazy expat neighbourhood of Itaewon.

Seoul Pub, Woodstock, Gecko. I moved from one bar to the next. On my way to Rocky Mountain Tavern, a cheesy but comfortingly Canadian-themed place, I heard a familiar grungy distorted guitar wail. Lonely, desperate, pathetic, but beautiful. It called to me. But where was this sound coming from? I looked all around, ears perked. At first, I thought it was coming from a bar, some hidden out-of-the-way place I hadn't noticed before. Then, I decided that it must be coming from one of the passing cars. I ran back and forth across the street through the traffic, two, three, four times, urgently trying to find the source of this haunting music, but to no avail.

So I stumbled on in the December night, on to the next bar, and then a few more after that, until my mind was so saturated in alcohol that I couldn't remember in the morning how I had gotten back to the safety of my hostel bed.

  2. When you're living in or around Korea, or own a really fast airplane or teleportation device.
